“More students now able to access youth allowance“

Universities will charge students a fee from next year for services such as advocacy, sport, clubs and societies after a bill repealing the Howard government’s voluntary student unionism legislation passed the Senate.
The bill empowers universities to charge students a fee ($263 for next year) to fund campus services and student societies. Canberra will pay their fee to universities and recoup it from students through a new category of the Higher Education loan program.

Grasp the opportunity

“Either swallow your pride or turndown an opportunity to broaden your horizons”

Remember when you were little and all you ever wanted to be was a fireman, or a princess or whatever? You wanted it so much you’d do anything, even if it meant selling your little seven-year-old soul. Ten years later our career prospects aren’t as spectacular, but neither is our dedication to grasp that one dream job. But there are so many gates of opportunity for university students to open on their long path to a future career. All you need to do is find it.

What “Sells” in the job market

“Comes down to understanding what employers are looking for”

Getting a job is tough nowadays, and as the year draws to a close we have seen some dramatic changes in the Australian employment market. The unemployment rate in Australia has settled at the 5.3% mark in August 2011 – a telltale sign of what graduating students and jobseekers should expect. This might mean that tougher times lie ahead, with more vicious competition, less job openings, and higher levels of employer expectations.
The key to success in the job market comes down to understanding what really ‘sells’ in the marketplace. You have to know what is expected of you, what employers are looking for, and how you should present yourself in order to get noticed.

Service fee back in
Campfires and star spangled banners

“The summer camp organisation will match you to the camp which best suits you”

Backpacking your way through flea-ridden hostels in Eastern Europe might not be your thing. Nor is listening to your parents whinge that if you’re not going to uni you might as well get a job. But this might just be the answer, over in the big U-S of A!

Sydney wins games

Monash had the largest team at the 2011 Australian University Games on the Gold Coast this year, with 465 team members, closely followed by The University of Melbourne with 346 athletes.
But it was to no avail with the University of Sydney awarded the overall champion university trophy at the closing presentation, taking the title from 2010 winners The University of Western Australia.
